Austin Chesterfield Clarke was born, Barbados in 1934 and emigrated to Canada to attend the University of Toronto in 1955. His latest novel, The Polished Hoe, has won the 2003 Commonwealth Writers Prize, the 2003 Trillium Award and the 2002 Giller Prize. The author of nine novels and five short-story collections in the United States, England and Canada, Mr. Clarke is the recipient of numerous awards including the W.O. Mitchell Prize; the Toronto Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature; and the Order of Canada. In fall 1998, Vintage Canada re-released three of Mr. Clarke’s long-out-of-print early novels (The Toronto Trilogy) and a memoir, Growing Up Stupid Under the Union Jack. In 2002, Mr. Clarke published Pigtails and Breadfruit: A Culinary Memoir (Random House Canada/New Press, USA). Last November McClelland & Stewart released Mr. Clarke’s ninth novel, The Question, which was short-listed for the Governor General’s Award. Program: Austin Clarke |
