Harryette Mullen

Harryette Mullen’s family has roots in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, and Texas. She was born in Florence, Alabama (home of blues legend W.C. Handy) and grew up in Fort Worth, Texas (birthplace of jazz innovator Ornette Coleman). She studied literature at the University of Texas, Austin, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. She currently teaches courses in English and African American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her work has appeared in several anthologies, including the newest edition of the Norton Anthology of African American Literature. She is the author of six poetry books, most recently Blues Baby (Bucknell University Press, 2002) and Sleeping with the Dictionary (University of California Press, 2003), which was nominated for a National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award, and Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
