Laurie McAndish King

Born and raised in Iowa (the pulmonary artery of the American heartland), Laurie McAndish King majored in philosophy in college, and moved to San Francisco in the seventies. There, she built a successful career in marketing, and was eventually seconded to open an advertising agency in Australia. After working in Melbourne for a year, and brief stints in Paris, London, and Toronto, Ms. King wanted nothing more than to travel the world. She enjoyed cities, but Queensland's leeches were her real travel bug, and they bit hard. Exploring Arnhemland, the wilds of western Tasmania, Uluru, and the Olgas inspired her to walk away from her corporate career eight years ago ... and to keep on walking. Since then, she has studied medicinal plants in the jungles of Brazil, lived in a commune in Argentina, chased lemurs through the mountains of Madagascar, fought off leeches in several tropical rainforests, and tracked lions — without a gun — in Botswana.
