Born in New York City, Nelson Eubanks grew up in New York and New Jersey. He received a B.A. from Columbia University in 1994, an M.A. in creative writing from the university of San Francisco in 1998 and an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University in 2003. Mr. Eubanks briefly pursued a professional life in soccer and played in Barcelona, Spain, for Sant Andreu in 1996. He realized, though, that he wanted to be a full-time writer, and soon after receiving his B.A. from Columbia, traveled down the long Chilean Coast, then up through Argentina and into Brazil where he began writing the stories for his first book The First Thing Smoking (One World/Ballantine, 2003). He spent a few months in Brazil in 1999 before coming back to New York. He's settled, for now, in New Orleans where he is at work on a novel. Program: Tough Guys |
