Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1934, John Maxwell began his lifelong career in journalism in 1951 at the Jamaica Gleaner. Since that time he has held several senior positions at the BBC and the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), the predecessor to TVJ. In 1974, he originated Jamaica’s first modern radio talk show, Public Eye. An active environmentalist, Mr. Maxwell won the Sandal’s Ecojournalism Prize in 2000 for spearheading the campaign to save Hope Gardens through his weekly column in the Sunday Observer. He is the author of the book How to Make Our Own News (Canoe Press, 2000), a primer for environmentalists and journalists. Since 1991, Mr. Maxwell has been teaching Media Law and Ethics at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (Carimac), at the University of the West Indies.
